With a strong vocation for exportation, the Jeep Automotive Center reinforces the presence of the brand in Latin American countries
On the Atlantic route, the Jeep Renegade produced in Goiana, Pernambuco is conquering new markets. The model already landed in Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. Now it’s Mexico’s turn. Almost 4297 nautical miles (about 8 thousand Kilometers) separate the port of Suape, on the coast of Pernambuco (Brazil), with the port of Veracruz, on the Mexican east coast. For Brazilians, the shipments consolidate the strategy of producing to compete in more demanding global markets. On the Mexican side, the arrival of the Renegade meets the domestic demand for the vehicle that has reinvented the segment of compact SUVs in the world.
With 25 years of experience in automotive journalism, David Loji from Mexico has experienced unforgettable moments in his career, but his reaction to his first ever visit to the Jeep Automotive Center was pure admiration: “These are innovative processes,” he said. Loji was part of a group of Mexican journalists who accompanied, step by step, the birth of a Jeep Renegade. Originally from Pernambuco, Sérgio Oliveira, who now lives in Mexico and represents El Informador, assessed the plant as “one of the most modern in the world”.
During the tour of the Jeep plant, he was able to see the processes which make the Center a reference in automotive technology and management, including the Component Center, where quality is tested and each component produced is minutely evaluated (Jeep Compass and Fiat Toro, in addition to the Renegade). The tour also included the Process Center, a kind of mini-factory where employees train and hone their skills.
Lorena Marina, reporter for Rolling Stone Mexico, was impressed with the agility of the process and how in synch the employees were. For her, the interaction between man and machine gives the plant a unique edge, emphasizing on the more than 600 robots, in the auto body shop, that perform 100 welding points in just one minute. And all this cutting-edge machinery is adapted to the ergonomic needs of the Center’s eight thousand employees.
At the end of the visit, the reporter for the Publimetro Newspaper, Mario Rossi, summed up the whole process: “It is a standard that can meet the expectations of the most demanding markets “. Currently, approximately 25% of the earnings from cars produced in the Jeep Plant are for exportation. “The cars are already leaving the factory according to the specific criteria of each market, “explained our Out Bound area manager Marcos Corrêa. From the boarding process to the arrival in Mexico, it takes, on average, 15 days. Logistics is facilitated by the strategic position of Suape, a Northeastern cargo hub.
The vocation of the Jeep Plant in Goiana for export is already impacting the cargo load of the Pernambuco port. FCA shipments were responsible for 147% of growth in loads from our lot last year. Only in the first quarter of this year we had a 48% growth, compared to the same period in 2016, with the exportation of 9.2 thousand cars from FCA, which is more than 70% of the total handling.
Our cars are loaded onto eight-story ships with a capacity of up to eight thousand vehicles. The Mexican journalists checked out the port yard, which can transport 250,000 cars per year. That´s where cars are parked until they are ready to go on a ramp and into the ships, that look more like garage-buildings. Boarding is fast: up to 2,000 vehicles in 24 hours, in a careful process closely monitored by operators specialized in logistic services, ensuring that each car reaches its destination the same way it left the Jeep Plant.
Our Mexican journalists were able to feel the robustness of the Off-road Jeep Renegae at our Jeep plant in Goiana. “The Renegade brings together everything you expect in a 4×4, with all the adventurous spirit of a Jeep, “said Lorena, after concluding her experience. “All of this even for a compact model,” she said. The tour also included a test drive from Recife to Porto de Galinhas, passing through the port of Suape, where the Renegade exhibited the high level of comfort, efficiency and technology that will soon hit the streets of Mexico.
